Pulled the trigger today...
....on new wheels and tires.
I couldn't find the combination of extreme lightness and price that I would have liked in 16" rims for my 1990 Miata, so I accepted that 15" was going to be the way to go. So I've just ordered four 949 Racing 15x7.5 6ULs with Toyo T1Rs in 195/50 and all the extra bits (new lug nuts, hub-centering rings, valves) The 15x7.5 6UL weighs 11.5 lbs and the 195/50 T1R weighs in at 16 or 17 lbs. That makes for a huge step down in weight from my previous Ronal R20 16x7" wheels with B.F. Goodrich EuroTAs in 205/45-16 at a total weight of 39 lbs per corner. Also the price of the 6ULs seemed very reasonable for a wheel in that weight class at $149 (US) a piece. Just waiting for them to arrive by FedEx ground! -- Alan Baker Vancouver, British Columbia <http://gallery.me.com/alangbaker/100008/DSCF0162/web.jpg> |

Good choice Alan! I'm not big on the looks of the 15's but those 6UL's are
quite nice and like you say, a good price / weight / looks ratio. I look forward to getting a report on the net effect! I spoke to Brian at Good-Win-Racing today and was able to change from the aluminum silver finish version to the nickel finish that I really wanted (but which was out of stock when I place my order initially). So essentially, I'll be getting this: <http://www.949racing.com/productimages/15x7.5_6UL_195_c.jpg> -- Alan Baker Vancouver, British Columbia <http://gallery.me.com/alangbaker/100008/DSCF0162/web.jpg> |

I ended up going with 16x7 Rota Slipstreams for my MSM that were (IIRC) about 2 lbs heavier. I think the UL looks nicer. |

After a lot of looking and a lot of thinking, I decided to go with the combination that seemed to best combine low weight, good looks and price. The only bad piece of news is that I've learned that I may need to run spacers on the wheels should I want to install a big brake kit... ....but since the 7.5" wheels are 42mm offset, and I would rather have had a little less than that, it does really make me unhappy. :-) -- Alan Baker Vancouver, British Columbia <http://gallery.me.com/alangbaker/100008/DSCF0162/web.jpg> |
