Default Value of an '03 SE

I have an '03 SE with 28000 miles (the strato blue/gray
cloth top version) that I will have to sell shortly. It has
ABS, the CD changer, and the limited slip differential. It
is a California car relocated to Florida last April. It is
clean, I've used Mobil 1 exclusively, and only added a dual
exhaust muffler. According to kbb.com, the trade-in value
is $16,900 and the retail, $19,575. These numbers seem
high - what does the group think?

NADA says $15,975 and $18,500.

i think that those numbers seem high. when i check a 2003 in 'excellent'
condition and estimated 36k miles (3 x 12k) i get $12,200 trade in value on
the kbb.org (nada says 16,500 for the same). perhaps the difference is our
zip codes. but none the less, assuming your numbers, i find it hard to
believe that a dealer would pay 16.9 to then sell it at 19.5 when the new
model sells for just a few thousand more... seems like that would be a tough
sale. i wonder if kbb/nada take into account the new body style released
this year. another thing to keep in mind is the seasonal pricing of miatas.
miatas command more in the spring than they can fetch this time of year. it
is probably worth holding on to until the spring to sell it. finally, if
you visit ebay.com and select 'advanced search' you can see the final value
from completed auctions... a good barometer of the market. a quick look
reveals only one 03 recently listed and it only attracted a 10,500 bid which
did not meet the sellers reserve... probably due to the seasonal interest
in the car and the location (md).

Agree. If dealers were selling 2005 Mazdaspeeds at 19.0, how would they
now sell 2003 SE's at 19.5?

I wonder whether they have a clue.

whoa, that's interesting, I never knew that you could do that advance search
deal and see completed auctions, I'll have to check that out.

As for the 03SE what a sweet looking car that is! It's near the top of my
list of best looking miatas. Good luck with the sale.
