Default Turn signal grey wires?

I just installed my new turn signal switch into my bug. It is the '71
turn signal w/ the brass horn contacts and the tail of wires (8 wires
to be exact). This is a one-year-only model.

What are the two grey wires (grey & grey/black) used for? Using my
multimeter I confirmed that these two wires are connected together when
the switch is in either the left or the right position. So they can be
used to indicate when the turn signal is in use, but do not give a
direction.

I'm pretty sure the two grey wires (grey & grey/black) were incorrectly
wired by the PO. The grey wire was connected to the grey wire from the
ignition switch which should be used for the door buzzer. The other
wire (grey/black) was connected to fuse #1 (non-fused side). Now this
seems wrong to me, so I disconnected the two wires from the turn signal
and taped them up. Such a setup would ground the #1 fuse when ever the
engine was off and the key was in the ignition. It's a good thing the
old switch was defective, or the ignition switch grey wire is broken.

All the functions of the turn signal work fine w/o the two grey
wires... so what are the grey wires for?

You're right; the PO messed it up.

The 2 wires have no function on your '71.
I don't know this as fact, but I'm willing to bet
that switch was used on "something" else and is now
a replacement for both models/cars.
