OK - the dreaded "diesel rattle at startup" is back.

Question - can the variator be replaced without doing cambelt etc. at
the same time (I had cambelt done 12000 miles / 32 months ago) ?

Yes, believe so.
When my cambelt was last changed, the service advisor said the variator
didn't need to be changed and that it could be changed later when the
"diesel rattle" surfaces. No it's not first hand experience :-)

Sure, but you will pay for work anyway. Replacement needs cambelt off and
price of cambelt is not that high, so...

When replacing the variator the belt has to come off, and it would be better
to put a new belt back as there is a chance of damaging the old one without
knowing. If this is due i would make it worth my while it get the water pump
changed also, for £20 to £40 its worth doing so you dont have to remove the
CAM belt yet again before its due.
