Default Passed inspection!

My 1991 turbo miata passed the new emissions test in my area with flying
colors. I was worried there, but it is running cleaner than it needs to
for passing the test. I guess that the 3 inch catalytic converter is
doing it's job.

I am pretty certain that the car would have failed if it had been a
1996+ model with the same engine & computer setup. I don't think that
there is even a way to connect the Tec-3 computer to their OBD-II test
equipment, but I may be wrong.

I have a friend with a heavily modified 1996 Mustang that keeps failing
the OBD-II computer test. He is either going to have to take the car
back closer to stock or sell it as a drag racer, a big money loss either
way.

The Link cannot generate OBD II codes. Fortunately, they do not test
cars here in Tallahassee. )

Yet.

We just started in September. For pre-1996 cars, they just sniff the
tail pipe, but for 1996+ cars I am pretty sure that there has to be an
OBD-II connector/computer or they can't legally do it.

If this is the case, it is going to make things very difficult for
people who have upgraded their engine computers on newer cars.

That's the case here in SE PA. The emission test consists of a fuel cap
check and a scan of the OBDII port. All this for the princely sum of $45 +
plus fees = about $75.

Here in Houston there are both emisions testing and highly modified newer
miatas so I would think that there is already a established solution or at
least series of potential solutions.

You could use the OEM CPU to return OBD codes and a front end to actually
control the engine as well as pass through the codes.

And I am sure aftermarket ECUs will eventually upgrade from 8088
chips with 1kb memory chips to 8086 screamers with enough memory
to return OBD II codes.

Here in the SF Bay area, the cars get put on a treadmill. The test is
somewhat involved and includes the sniffer inserted in the tailpipe and the
OBDII talking to the test computer.

Pre OBDII cars go to another type of place where "gross polluters" only are
tested. Such is the fate of my '90 Miata.

On the other hand, our Audi A4 Quattro is exempt from the treadmill as, I
suppose, are other full time AWD cars.

The whole process is expensive and a pain in the ass.
