Default Help in buying a FJ40

Hello,

I am thinking about buying a Toyota FJ40. I live in Arizona and I
plan on driving it 3 to 4 times a week for in city and twice a month
off-road. I have some questions about what I should look for and what
I should avoid.

1) For the models in the 70's are there any guiding principals…for
example "older is better" or "newer is better"? Any particular years
to avoid?
2) Some seem to have the original Toyota engine and others have V8's
from other manufactures. What is the trade off? Which would be more
reliable and which are higher performing?
3) I live in AZ, so AC is real must for the summer. If it does not
come with an AC unit how difficult\expensive is it to install an
aftermarket one?
4) Anything else I should be aware of?

Thank you for your help!

Gary
