Default Check light / Check engine light

This will probably qualify as a dumb question, but here we go: I have a
1990 325i. It has a light in the center of the dash that reads
"Check". Lower on the dash, in a line with several other lights is a
light that reads "Check engine". My question is are these the same or
different? If they are different, what are the differences? My check
light has been flashing since I have owned the car (about a month).
The check engine light comes on only with all of the others at startup.
Does the check light relate only to the light panel above the
windshield? There the brake light bulb burns constantly even though my
brake lights work fine, and the SRS light is on constantly. I didn't
get a manual so I need some information.
By the way, does anyone know where I could get a manual?
Thanks,

Different. The "Check" light is talking about the panel above the
windshield. This is the unit that checks the coolant and washer fluid
levels, oil level (I think) and electric bulb status (brake lights, turn
signals, head lights).

The check engine is only tied to the ECU and so indicates emissions
related errors and problems with the engine.

The brake led being on conbstantly on the check-control is a problem.
It means the system thinks there is a bulb blown. Don't forget the
center (high mount) brake light as that will trigger the fault light too.

The SRS light means there is a problem with SRS (Air Bags) and that will
most likelt require the attention of a professional specialist or the
dealer.

It's means your payment is late.
You need to write a "check"
