Cop going to prison

Well, the case is just beginning but... It happened last weekend or
early this week.

Off duty cop in civvies comes out of a bar about 2:30 am.

His story: I saw the guy driving off in my car. Me and my girl
friend chased him in her car until he bailed out and ran. I shot
him.

Perp's version: (he survived with a minor head wound)

I only went up to him in the vehicle and asked for a ride. he chased
me, I decided to give up and raised my hands when he shot me. I
didn't have a gun.

Lot's of stories from various people in the paper. Boils down to the
perp being lily white except that he does have a couple convictions
for aggravated assualt. Only weapon found on him was a pen knife. He
did call to thank the woman who let him in her house to call the
medics so seems tobe a nice guy.

I am waiting for the investigation report (it was turned over to the
state police) but it seems pretty cut and dried to me. If the perp
did not fire first or at least point a gun at the cop, he is dead
meat. Even cop can't shoot at thief, even one who is fleeing from
him, unless he feels threatened. And then this guy wasn't a cop in
the eyes of the law at the time of the incident.

Both the Cheif of Police and Mayor are new in their office and are
using a broom. Department has had many problems in the past with
people dying in custody, strange cases, etc. The chief just fired an
officer who exposed himself to a barrista and this case looks like
another good one to make his point that 'the times, they are a
changing'.
