Unfortunately, Ford's problems run much deeper than what they are doing
with the GT500/Mustang sales. They only wish the rest of their car line
was as successful as the Mustang. IMO, Ford's biggest problem is they
have good cars that have no identity. They have ditched their long time
model names and in the process disconnected themselves from a large
number of past buyers of those cars. Re-badging the 500 a Taurus is a
step in the right direction, IMO. They need to bring out a RWD, V-8 two
door coupe and sell it as the Thunderbird too. Maybe even make an
upscale version of the Mustang and market as the new Cougar.

Seeing that they are getting well over $50k for the GT500 and they
probably have less than $6k-$7k invested in parts to make a Mustang GT
into a GT500 they are probably making more money under their current
system. Just look at how much money they are making off the Shelby name
alone on these cars. Without that name on it they would be lucky to get
$40k for them, IMO.

I vote for the latter too but I doubt it will put more money in Fords
pocket over what they are doing now. Plus, I think the days of having
long option lists to choose from on factory orders are long gone for
cost saving reasons. I would love to have an option for a a rock solid
bottom end though. Then all it would take is a KB blower to make my own
GT500, or hell make it a GT600!

Hopefully the new guy from Toyota they hired is applying the lube to
their ears as I type to get this done.

Except the 500 badge name was in my opinion a step in the right direction, I
liked the car and the name. Sticking the Taurus name on that car ****es me
off, they couldn't have kept the 500 and redone the Taurus?

Now where the hell is the new Mustang chassis based retro 1969~1970 styled
Mercury Cougar??? I want my 500 horse 5.4 2009 Cougar Eliminator!!!

I think re-badging the 500 was the best they could do to stop the
profuse bleeding. I think they would prefer to bring out a new Taurus
but didn't have the time, and maybe the cash, to pull it off. I think
they should have designed an all new car that was as risky as the first
Taurus was in its day. Ford really crawled out on a limb with the
original Taurus and it paid off BIG. They did the same with the new
Mustang's styling and it too paid off big. IMO, they need to regain
that same spirit in order to get themselves out of their current mess.

I think an upscale Cougar well optioned with a 400 hp, 5.0L, N/A 32
valve V-8 would sell like hotcakes priced around $35k.

That car has had everything short of being stroked done to it. If the
4.6 is so great, how come the first thing you modular guys do is is put
a 5.4 under your hood? Even then it is all you can do keep up with stock
5.0 with a little nitrous shot. The all aluminum cobra 5.0 was pound for
pound the best all around engine ford ever produced, followed closely by
the 5.4 in the lightnings. I know the FORD GT has the baddest engine
that ford and svt have ever produced, but it costs to much. Put some
cast iron heads on that 4.6 and lets see what you think about it then.

I still can't see an engine with a 3.33 bore and a 4.16 stroke being "high
performance." Just seems wrong

I still say a 4 door, sporty station wagon Mustang would sell like crazy!
