It is called by several other names such as "freon" R12, R32, R34a etc. Over a period of time this gas seeps past the seals on the compressor (pump) and is released into the atmosphere thus you have LOST all the stuff that makes the system work. Once the pressure has gone several fail safe mechanisms fall into place and one is a pressure switch that prevents the compressor from running and seizing due to there being no oil in the system. If there is a blockage another switch will stop everything working so the increased pressure won't destroy the system. The usual reasons in order of occurrence that stop A/C from working are 1 Condenser has a hole in it - renew and check fan too 2 gas has leaked out via compressor - check system and re-gas 3 Magnetic clutch has a fault - replace clutch or compressor (mine actually disintegrated last year and required a re-con compressor) Fuses do not blow unless something has gone wrong - that's why they are there to stop the car catching fire when there is an extraordinary load on the electrical system.
