I'm sorry if I'm demeaning a '66 vette, I don't mean to but ....
I'm stupid and maybe someone can educate me. Aside from a true
classic now and bigger engine (not sure its faster when all this
translates to the pavement) why spend $85k when you can spend less
(well maybe not a lot less but you'd get a new Z06)? I suppose if
you keep the Z06 long enough it too will be a classic.

Again my apology to the '66 vette. It looks nice in the pics.

guess you would have to be a classic car lover to
understand.
maybe if you would have grown up in the era ?
some have seen a classic when they were young and fell in
love with it.
then they grow up and can afford the classic.

I think you hit it on the head. It's the car that you grew up wishing you
could own but couldn't afford it until now. The other issue and no offense
to 1984+up owners but I personally don't like the new style vettes starting
with the C4s. Guess it shows how old I am when I consider 1984 and up new!

The newer Vettes are too refined for me, the older ones just seem more
race-bred oriented - rough around the edges. The new ones remind me of
Ferrais, Lamborgdhias and Lotuses (excuse the spelling) - a switch to
European styling.

my two Cdn cents (1.90 US cents)

Well 1st off I am in my 60's .. a certified OLD fart... and learning
to me watchful of my cash as I hope to have a few cents in the Bank
on the day I croak...

Given the choice of a brand new Z06 or a 66 (correct 66) I have to say
without blinking my eyes twice it would be the 66 ... simple
appreciation in value (although I think all mid years did loose a
little value last year) vs depreciation...
PLUS drive a new Corvette (or ZO6) and see just how many people
actually turn theoir heads and look.. then take the 66 out and make
the same observation... BIG DIFFERENCE...

I do howver value the refrinement of the newer Corvettes ..especially
when traveling... I did the 1999 Nation Corvette Caravan as a State
co-captin and my wife and I drove my 72 ...damd thing kiled us old
farts .. back hurt, feet burned, parked at night and headded straight
for the hot tub at the hotel.. wife bitch about only being allowed
the pair of shoes she was wearing PLUS one addition par because of
lack of storage place etc..

Should have done the trip in my 95 at the time...more space much more
comfortable (especially for us older folks) BUT I honestly wanted to
have fun and the 72 was just much for fun to drive....(should have
though about just how long I would be driving because after 6-7 hours
fun turned into discomfort) ...

I sold the 95 and purchased a 98 just for traveling...I keep my 64. 72
and 76 for just pure fun...take them out on the back twisties and run
thru the gears., have fun takling the turns and listen to the exhaust
and engine "sing" ( radios never get turned on)... GREAT feeling to
be 25 years old again...BUT after an hour the back starts hurting
and I got head home ...lol My 79 is my only automatic Corvette, it
is reserved for Saturday evening ICE CREAM Runs with the wife ..nice
slow relaxed trips to the Ice Cream joints within 30-40 miles of our
home..

The 98 is now my traveling car... Next trip is up to Glenn Falls, NY
for the Adirondack Corvette weekend in September ..about 1000 miles
round trip and I k now my wife and I will arrive without suffering
back pain or sore asses etc....

The newer Corvettes are just so much better then the older ones it is
not funny...faster, more fuel effecient, better built, BUT they
honesty lost the Mechanical feel that I enjoy in a car.... I ride in
my 98, I drive my others ...I look at people when driving my 98 people
look at me when I drive the others...(cops included darn)... LOL

Great post Bob.
I don't know if this has been asked before but how do you feel about
your '64 compared to the rest of Vettes (strengths vs. weaknesses,
etc.. ) ? I have no desire for a '64 (no disrespect intended) but
just curious how you feel about yours considering you have several
newer?

My 64 was actually a mistake on my part when I purchased it...I knew
the car and the owner for 10-15 years and knew it was very well taken
care of BUT regularly saw triple digits but no hole shots etc...

.. .Full documentation all the way back to the original order forms
(from Saigon, confirmation from GM's Foreign Distribution center in
N.Y, the original bill of sale from the delivering dealer all the
paperwork associated with the car..build sheet, etc.. and the original
canceled check owner wrote for the car...In short the car is NOT a
driver that can be just plain flung around... I did however put Disc
brakes on the front and boy did I take a lot of flack for that... But
I had planned to drive it hard and wanted better brakes... The car has
all the right stuff original KO's 365 Hp solid lifter engine and one
of (500) that was equipped with the new Transistorized Ignitions...

In short the car is just too good and original to really enjoy because
I am not about to drive it extremely hard... Strengths is its all
car, and it feels fast (never took it to the strip however, looks
good etc..... Weakness is that my ASS hurts after driving it more then
an hour...and I have to remove & Install the KO's myself as I do not
trust some 16 yo Tire changer to even touch them both for safety and
value reasons...

My 72 however is a blast, I'm the original owner, blew the engine
within a year, and dropped a 68 327-350 in it so its numbers do not
match but the 327 is much stronger then the stock engine ,,. I can
abuse the car and not feel guilty about it at all... Both the 72 &
64 have been winners at Carlisle multiple times...which does not mean
anything except I figured out where to park the darn things on
Saturday ...

Favorite Vette is the 76... it does not compare to the others BUT
overall its my favorite one just to drive and enjoy...

The 98 is absolutely great...BUT it really is not as much fun to drive
as the earlier cars... it is not completely stock..Street Legal
Performance ZL5 package, 2000 wheels, and an after market shifter
to go with the Z51 suspension at least make it different from a
Cadillac

What can I say....

BTW the 79 is a automatic...nice car to cruise to the Ice Cream store
on the weeks...on gravel it may spin the wheels..and its an L82..?

Got to be just a little on the crazy side to drive a '64 over 100,
tried that today and shut it down at a bit over 100, felt like running
on ice, (stock shocks, springs, and no sway bars). That same stretch
would get me 130+ on the C6 and you feel like you're welded to the
road.

Do you use any anti-seize on the KO's? I found one galded when I went
through the drive train and supension. I couldn't get any of them back
to where they were before I removed them and they came loose hard.

I second that and most other tire changers would play hell touching
it.

Does that ZL5 package do anything for horse power or just sound like
it, I couldn't tell much difference with the ones I installed for
other owners, I didn't like the sound of them myself.

Actually the sound is a little too tame for me...nowhere near as loud
as My Brothers 99 with a Corsa exhaust...

One of the Vette Mags a few years ago did a installation & test of
the ZL5 system and it added 30 HP to the car at the rear wheels on the
Dino .. major jump came from the LS2 intake manifold to replace the
stock LS1 intake... Blackwing did not add much and the Exhaust did not
add a heck of a lot either...
