Scary!
Friday A.M. I was 2nd behind a slow vehicle, 40 or thereabouts in a 55. The
vehicle behind the slow one pulled out to pass. A young lady came out of a side road on the left, and I noticed she never looked to her right, didn't stop at the stop sign, in fact didn't even slow. She turned to her right and was facing the passing car head on. I was braking hard and heading for the ditch on my right to avoid what I thought was going to be a bad accident. She headed for the ditch on her side and the passing car tried to move right to miss a head on. The passing car sideswiped her and the slow car. No injuries, just metal crunching. I stayed until EMT's and cop arrived and, with others, gave statement to cop. The young lady did receive citations from the officer. I did overhear her tell officer she was "late for work". The officer reminded her that a gent with the same excuse killed a woman about 3 months ago on the same road about a mile further down. I recall that one as my neighbor was a witness and told me about it. |

Just watch, they'll restripe the road into a no passing zone even when the incident was caused by something else entirely. nate -- replace "roosters" with "cox" to reply. http://members.cox.net/njnagel |

Look right, plenty of clearance, look left and plenty of clearance just a couple trucks comeing down aways. I go and the 2nd truck pulls out to pass. I took the shoulder (plenty wide) but the truck bombs his brakes (lots of smoke). Not even close and he could have continued his pass. Did get my heart rate up. Had the same happen turning right out of the drive but I caught the start of the pass before I got on the highway. In both cases there was no way to tell a pass was going to begin although I am sure I would have gotten ticketed for failure to yield. Harry K |

It would be interesting to read what you think caused the incident. I guess your evidence that this incident did not occur in a no passing zone is that that detail is conspicuously absent. You don't need to know "where" the incident occurred (another missing and pertinent detail) so that you might evaluate the environment for yourself and forward a more informed opinion? It doesn't occur to you to wonder how one might have "noticed she never looked to her right" from such a distance, with 2 vehicles very possibly blocking that view? You don't wonder what the crash rate data might be on that stretch of road? You don't wonder if a no passing zone might be appropriate, you just know that it isn't... or more likely "could not be needed"? What kind of "engineer" did you say you were? (Please don't suggest "knowledgeable".) ----- - gpsman |

But both would be justified, because an actual hazardous situation did occur. |

The 50mph speed limit road I drive on my way home from work was resurfaced. They removed the passing zone. Now I can't pass the idiots who drive 35mph on this road. There are no side streets where the passing zone was either. Although the last one I passed (doint about 40-42 long before I caught up to her) accelerated while I was passing and then when I turned on to the next road, 35mph speed limit, she was tailgating to the point I just pulled over and she went on at about 50mph... |
