I've been following this thread with interest as I used to unscrew the
caps on my battery and top up the water but not with the current one which
has no caps. The old batter lasted 9 years. The current battery bought
second hand has lasted 6. However on closer examination after reading this
thread I see that half of the top of the battery will pop up (the half
which does not include the posts) so I am going to give it a try.

I assume I just add water to cover the plates.

I don't have any distilled water but do have 2 feet of snow in the back
yard, some of which I scooped up into a plastic jug and am just waiting
for to melt. Should be close enough to distilled for the job.

There ARE certain types of battery that are truly maintenance-free,
though. AGM (Absorbtive Glass Mat, aka "Gel Cells") like the Optima are
truly sealed and don't have any liquid water. You can still ruin one by
over-charging, which causes the electrolyte in the mat to out-gas too
fast and pop safety seal, opening the battery to air so that it will
dry out and die.

============

AGM and Gel Cells have some similar characteristics, but they are
different technologies. There is liquid in the AGM, but it is generally
well absorbed in the glass mat and much less prone to spilling that
a traditional wet cell.

The AGM is more forgiving on charging rate than the gel cells. Standard
lead-acid chargers can be fatal to gel cells due to the gas pockets which
can form around the electrodes and be held captive by the gel. Any section
of an electrode which isn't touching gel is effectively gone forever. This
is the reason why some applications such as uninterrupted power supplies
take what seems like forever to recharge the battery packs.
