Default Map: Where the dumbest drivers are - Mostly the East Coast

http://money.cnn.com/2010/05/27/auto...adly/index.htm

(CNNMoney.com) -- One in five licensed drivers -- some 38 million
Americans -- lack the knowledge necessary to pass a written driving test,
and even more are distracted while driving, according to a survey released
Thursday. The annual GMAC Insurance National Drivers test polled 5,202
licensed drivers from 50 states and the District of Columbia with a 20-
question test derived from state department of motor vehicles exams. A
passing grade was 70% or better. The survey also asked about distracting
habits such as texting while driving.

Most of the idiots are on the East Coast! HAHAHAHA!

Hey, we're #4!

1. (WORST) New York - 70.0
2. New Jersey - 70.5
3. Dist. of Columbia - 71.9
4. California - 73.3
5. Rhode Island - 73.8
6. Louisiana - 74.1
7. West Virginia - 74.8
7. Hawaii - 74.8
9. New Hampshire - 74.9
9. Kentucky - 74.9

15. North Carolina - 75.9
15. Arkansas - 75.9
17. Texas - 76.0
18. Connecticut - 76.3
19. Illinois - 76.6

I wonder if anyone ever thinks that maybe, just maybe, the tests are
wrong? I say that as someone who missed only 1 question in all the
written DMV tests I've taken (I goofed on how far away brights need to
be dimmed, IIRC). A lot of us in ca.driving sure understand that on
urban freeways, the "following rule" is unworkable. And turning into
a skid? No, that just puts you into the tree.

"Try using a turning knob." http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/dl625/dl625senior.pdf

I don't think we're driving in Kansas any more.

Nearly all of my years of driving has been done in Mass, California,
and GB.
UK drivers are the best and traffic rules rules make most sense,
usiually.
Califofrnia has the most skillful at highway drivers, and Massahusetts
drivers are the most "interesting," by far.
BTW, I've never driven in Florida.-

Any list that doesn't have Maryland at or near the very bottom is
automatically suspect. DC is just about where I'd expect it to be,
however. I find NY and NJ drivers far more pleasant to interact with
than DC or Maryland, FWIW... at least they know what lane to drive in
and don't apparently suffer from chronic rectal-cranial inversion...

Forgot to add, I never understood why everyone always says "turn into
the skid." "Keep your front wheels pointed where you want to go" is
much clearer, easier to remember, more intuitive, and the same damn thing.

I don't see how that would help with understeer. The best way to handle
that is to straighten the wheel, regain traction, slow down and then
turn where you want to go.

That's true; however, the vast majority of my experience with "skids" is
from driving RWD vehicles in the snow. In the instance you specify,
"steering into the skid" wouldn't be appropriate, but then again, if
you're understeering on a public road, you're probably doing something
wrong to begin with...

This list is contrived as areas with more universal compliance with
posted speed limits or other arbitrary traffic laws would be areas
they would consider to have the "good" drivers. Notice the insurance
industry has a lot to do with this list. Some of the states they
listed would tend to have a lot of left lane blockers, speed traps and
slow asses. I thought Georgia should be MUCH higher on the list, and
either Florida or South Carolina should have probably topped it. I've
noticed some of the most considerate, sensible drivers seem to be in
upstate New York and West Virginia, so I don't like this list.

Oklahoma is ranked way too high. It should have been #1 or #2 worst.
