Default Corvette prices in UK - why so high?

I'd be interested in comments by UK Corvette drivers on the seemingly
astronomical prices they go for. If you look at www.corvette.co.uk, in
the "list of cars" section, you see a 2003 Anniversary edition for
£35,995 - that would be $65,870 at the current exchange rate of $1.83.

Also, does anyone know if there is a material difference between a
Euro spec car and one which has been imported and then converted? On
the same page there is a Z06 which was a personal import and has been
converted. The only difference I can see is that the reverse lights
are either side of the rear license plate whereas on a Euro they are
crescents let in to the inner rear lights.

(if you have problems viewing this site then changing %5C in the URL
bar to a / seems to fix them).

Hi Jim....

Firstly, the website you went to is one of the UKs main independant
specialist for corvettes and, as such, will pay a premium due to the
dealer's vast knowledge of his subject. A couple of other websites you might
like to check are http://www.autotrader.co.uk which is UK's main
auto-trading website or http://www.corvetteclub.org.uk/ which is the UK's
nationwide corvette owners club.

Secondly, all cars in the UK, not just american cars cost more in the UK
than they do in else where in the world, in fact, a few years ago, our most
prominant auto-show on TV (Top Gear) actually worked out that you could save
thousands on a britsh car that was manufactured in the UK by going to Japan
and importing it back in.....and that included all .(including transport,
insurance, tax, duty and DOT testing costs)....work that one out.

Also, Corvettes are rare over here so if you want one, you ganna have to
pay...supply and demand I guess....but you can get cheaper of you go to
mainland europe.

As you stated, the main difference in the euro-spec cars are the
lighting....heres the major changes enforced by the UKs Department of
Transport under their SVA programme

a) No Daytime running lights but are allowed when lights are on
b) Running lights are amber, not red/white
c) fog lights in the embedded in the rear
d) rear licence plate holder is "full-width" with back-up lights combined
with tail-light clusters which are red/amber
e) On the UK model, the front lights will have a different beam pattern (dip
left, rather than right)

There maybe a few other items such as emmissions, noise, radio frequencies,
tyres sizes and safety gizmo's but no major differences from the ex-factory
spec.

Hope that helps....but give us a nod if you wanna know any more at Chris at
