Default E34 instrument cluster problems.

Wife's early (89) E34 525i cluster is playing up. Temp gauge only went
occassionally and speedo was playing up sometimes. I took it apart and put
it back together again and now speedo hardly goes at all, except when you go
over 100 kph and needle will simetimes bounce all over the place. Tacho
continues to go fine.
Can I replace it with one from an 88 520i which reads in mph instead of kph?
If I do, how easy is it to swap our existing odometer to the replacement
cluster to keep the same distance reading on the car?
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Steve
