Default GPU upgrade advice

I saw there is a thread just down about it, but I didn't want to hijack it.

My system.
P4 2.8
512 ram
9700
Would getting a 9800 make much of a difference for me? Ram is pretty much
out of the question because I have old rd ram and it's expensive. I also
have 4 128 sticks.
Any help would be great. If it doesn't make sense I'll just wait and do the
whole motherboard, chip, GPU. I imagine I will be spending 90% of my time
with GTR and maybe a little HL2 if it blows me away.

Thanks,

Chad

It might make a teeny tiny difference. Certainly not worth cost vs the
performance gain. Do you use XP? If so, then getting more ram should be a
priority. A comfort level for XP is 512mb for the OS and background tasks
to work under and then another 512mb for your sim. Again this won't be a
cheap move if you already have fairly pricey ram, but that should be the
next step. Then wait and save for a big all over move after the new Intel
initiatives take hold.
