Cigar Lighter blowing fuses
My 1972 Mustang Coupe likes to blow fuses.
I bought a new lighter and element installed them, after cleaning all the rust and filth, when I push the lighter in the fuse blows. I've run continuity between the power and ground, ground is good and the power only grounds when the lighter is pushed in. I've tried it with the lighter installed in the dash and with it dangling, making sure I'm not grounding out anywhere. The horn is on the same fuse, but I've got it disassembled at the horn button, and it works with everything hooked up. By the service manual these are the only things on that fuse. I'm assuming (I know) that the way it's supposed to work is push in lighter, you get resistance, element heats up, gets to certain temp., lighter pops out. Is this incorrect? Or am I missing something obvious? |

It only has one wire going to it for hot lead, and the housing is the ground to the dash. Put in the new housing and it works correctly with either lighter. Of course, I only need mine for a power source since i gave up smoking the day i had heart surgery. Cigar Lighter blowing fuses
Mine stays in no problem.
Ford must of changed the design between the years cause mine has a ground connected to the screw on that holds it all to the dash. New one and the original. As soon as its pushed in the fuse pops. I never smoked, but I would like it to work. When you say "lighter and element", does that include the socket? If not, maybe that element is wrong for your socket. Dave |

And Socket.
I'm ready to give up and move on.For now I'm just gonna install it and leave it unhooked. I think you need to return the new lighter and socket for another one. From what you've said, it sounds like it is shorting directly instead of going through the coil. Dave |
