Head to www.techauthority.com

That is the official Manual web site for all Chrysler products.

You can sign up online for access, but the full Factory Service Manual
for the ZJ is only 90 dollars and is money well spent even if you have
someone else work on your GC for you.

Part number is 81-370-6147

Before you swap it, you might want to post on the
Rec.autos.makers.jeep-willys newsgroup with why you think it is the
motor instead of the rear wiper switch that tends to fail in the
intermittent position more often than the motor itself.

Do you always get fluid from the wiper? If not Fuse #9 could be bad as
it feeds the wiper switch plus the washer pump.

There is a liftgate open switch that if it falsely detects the liftgate
is open, it will disable the wiper.

You can also get a bad ground at the controller module that kills the
wiper motor.

If the 96 is like the 95, you just pop that cover at the retaining bolt
on the wiper arm. Then remove that big nut carefully.

Mark the position of the gasket and bezel then just pull them off the
bolt that comes out of the motor.

THEN you get to remove the trim panel off the inside of the liftgate.
Buy an electric screwdriver... And see if your dealer has any of those
little pop fasteners you will inevitably break.

After you get done swearing at how much fun it was to remove that
interior panel, there is a simple connector for the two wires to the
motor to disconnect, then the motor is held on by two nuts and one bolt
that are reasonably simple to get at.

You can test the motor by applying battery and ground to it off your
battery.

When you put it back, use a good small torque wrench so you dont bind it
up and overload the motor or have the wiper arm fall off in a carwash.

Motor mounting bolt 10-15 inch lbs

Motor mounting nuts, 35 - 50 inch lbs

Wiper arm nut 160 inch lbs

Where that factory manual has nice pictures and tips and all...
