Default What is viatology?

You may have come across the term 'viatology' in these newsgroups.
But what does it mean?

In its simplest definition, viatology is the scientific study of
roads. Using the scientific method to measure roadways and roadway
apparatus, one can better understand a widely-used transportation
medium on all inhabited continents. Some examples of viatological
study include the exit-numbering assignments, carriageway shoulder
widths, lane designations, etc.

The term viatology derives from one of the earliest and most famous
roads, the Via Appia (English: Appian Way). For more information on
viatology, including international translations of the term, visit
