how common were automobiles in 1890?

I stopped to help a little old lady with a flat tyre. She was driving an
Audi, and I found the independent rear suspension to be quite interesting.
Searching, I can only find SEAT (also part of VW)...

For 21st century cars,the 7th or 8th digit is for restraint code (safety).

1=seat belts
