Oil Changing Interval for 2004 Accord

Hi,

I have a 98 Accord. The manual says the oil changing interval
is 3750 miles for severe condition and 7500 for non-severecondition.
Most of my mileage is from highway driving, but nevertheless I change oil
every 3000 miles.

We just bought a 2004 Accord. The manual now specifies to change
oil every 5000 miles for severecondition and 10000 miles for non-severe
condition. Should I still be keep up with the schedule by changing oil every
3000 miles or can relax a bit? Any recommendations?

Thanks for you help!

Best Regards,
Eugene

There is a lot of confusion out there regarding how often one needs to change
the oil on the new Accords. I dont know the answer but i am applying a 5,000
mile interval for my accord even though most of the driving is done under
normal conditions -- a mix of stop and go and highway driving. The owners
manual recommends 10,000 but that seems too many to let it go. Ive always
changed the oil in my cars at 3,000-3,500 miles but Ive got to believe Honda
engineers know whats best so im going with 5,000. Just my 2 cents. It seems
like ive read a different answer to this anywhere i look.

eh , Your new honda will be very happy and last a long time if you just
stick to the 5000 mile change interval, you are wasting your money to
change more often than that

it is particularly important not to do the first one too soon.

The break-in oil Honda has been using for the last few years
(beginning in 2001, I think) has a LOT of molybdenum. Red Line oil
uses a LOT of molybdenum (about 600ppm) which is a highly-effective
anti-wear barrier agent. The Honda break-in oil uses about half again
MORE. So yes, it is very special stuff.

Most 5W-20 oils use a lot of molybdenum including Pennzoil, Chevron
(my two faves), Castrol, Mobil 1 0W-20 and Honda OEM. Motorcraft
5W-20 is available at Walmart quite cheaply and uses lost of boron
instead of molybdenum. All have produced very low wear rates in used
oil anaylses (UOAs).

I think most Hondas will be fine on 5,000 mile changes. I would NEVER
go 10,000 with any oil. Foolish economy.

Keep in mind, Honda wants you to happy with this car for at least
100,000 miles ... maybe even 150,000, but they have no interest in
making it last much longer than that.
