Epidemic of drunk driving so Ontario looks at random breath tests

The loony libertarians will howl about this but it's not half as bad
as the searches EVERYONE goes thru to fly on a commercial airliiner
even though drunk drivers pose a thousand times the threat terrorists
do.

Ontario looks at random breath tests
.Ontario isn’t slamming the door on random breathalyzer tests of
drivers, Attorney General Chris Bentley says.

“What we told the federal minister is that we will take a look at the
proposals ... I want to do anything that will protect public safety,
but what we want to do is make sure that the law is understandable and
that law applies in a way that is constitutionally appropriate and
that law enhances public safety,” Bentley said Wednesday.

Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson and Mothers Against Drunk
Driving (MADD) are supportive of legislative changes that would
empower police to perform breath tests on motorists even if there is
no reason to suspect drunk driving.

NDP Justice Critic Peter Kormos said police officers already have the
tools they need to apprehend impaired drivers.

“For police officers to demand breath samples without any reason
whatsoever is an outrageous breach of every Ontarian’s, every
Canadian’s, civil liberties,” he said. “It’s very disturbing that in
the shadow of the G20 arrests, where there were clear violations of
hundreds, thousands, of people’s civil liberties, that the Attorney
General wouldn’t immediately reject this proposition as being one
that’s contrary to the Charter and not necessary for effective
policing.”

Many Torontonians and visitors were subjected to random stops by
police officers during the G20 Summit in June, sparking numerous
complaints that the cops had violated people’s civil liberties.

Ontario Socialist never saw an intrusion they didn't think was a good thing.
The 401 has little traffic so they would have to stop every other one,
on many stretches to have enough stops to say they worked that day.

If loony libertarians want to drive drunk let them do it on private
propety not public roads.

So true.

I sympathize with many of their positions, not this one.

This loony libertarian thinks that one terrorist might give his life to head
on a car carrying one or two infidels, but that's not nearly as efficient as
one terrorist giving up his life to take out an airliner carrying 2 or 3
hundred infidels. I'll stick to driving, thanks.....But I really hope you
have a nice flight.

I don't know any libertarians who want to drive drunk. You should be able to
drive normally, whether you are drunk or not. And, this is pretty much the
way it is right now. first, a cap has to see you doing something abnormal
before he can stop you. Then, he can test your ability to drive and arrest
you if he or his machinery finds out that you are incapable, (for one reason
or another) of driving safely. I personally see nothing wrong with that.

What are you talking about? No one claims terrorists are deliberately
causing car crashes.

What are you talking about? No one claims terrorists are deliberately
causing car crashes.

Nor did I, because it's so inefficient. Giving your life to crash an
airliner is much more efficient. That's why I don't fly anywhere (Unless I
have to) But you are the one who compared flying to driving, not me. I also
don't drive anywhere unless I have to.
