With no attempt whatsoever to read the manual... What is the 'Winter Tyres'
setting on the onboard computer in my 156 (2002, JTS, new interior, old
exterior) for please?

Without doing any research I'd guess it's either a correction to the
odometer to allow for different rolling diameter, or an ASR setting.

As I recall, it's to correct the speedometer for higher profile winter
tyres.

Aha - what a brilliant featu So when I manage to get the car up to 130mph
in the snow, it will distract me by bleeping and flashing messages at me -
fabulous!

So you only put winter tires on when there's actually snow on the road?

In Germany, you are required to alert the driver to the fact that there are
tires fitted with a lowered speed rating. This can be done by putting a
sticker with the speed rating on your dash. I guess this alarm is allowed
as an alternative to that sticker. Certainly looks better and I gues it's
less likely you forget about it.

Last November I was in Germany with winter tires on, road was clean and I
forgot to put the sticker on my dash (my 156 has no such alarm). Just
testing how fast the old 156 would still run and just over 200kph I
suddenly realized I was running on 'T' tires...
