Gunky Ford steering wheels

RAMFM,

Many of you are familiar with the sticky, gunk-collecting steering
wheels on 80s and 90s Fords, among others. What would you recommend in
terms of a cleaner or solvent? I would rather avoid just wrapping or
covering it. Just was thinking there was something commonly by trim
shops, dealers or show-car enthusiasts that would be better than any old
household cleaner....

Try "Goo Gone" or "Goof Off 2" I've even used non Acetone nail polish remover but I'd
check in an inconspicuous spot first. Obviously the Tempo is getting the treatment, eh?

Boy now THERE'S a car Ford can be prond of :-) Kind of along the lines of the
Escort and the Chevy Chevette.

StuK, yes, the damned Tempo again. I've seen that stuff. It's getting
more work on it before winter, some just to make me feel better about
driving it another year. Bought some bitchin' gray K-Mart floormats
(that actually fit perfectly) for $20 today. Also chopped at the
console to fit an adjustable cup holder between the seats. Such excitement!

Mike, you're pretty much right... I say that it may be a POS, but it's
MY POS. :) But 193,000 and counting, burns almost zero oil between
changes, 28 mpg mixed driving. Does 80 just fine up and down 70 and 44.
Out of morbid curiosity, I clocked 0-60 at a scorching 12.5 sec. when
I first got it, and I have a stick. It'll go over 100 (I actually
clocked it once!) if you give it a few minutes.

Trainfan and Dep Dog, I've never heard of that, and it's probably a
better value for the money. Sticky ****, yes I like that... heh..
The thing is, if I went to the store and actually bought baby wipes, the
very instant I did so, my wife would then become the most fertile woman
on Earth, and I'd be doomed for sure ;)

Yes, we had few other decent choices when we were buying a car years ago
for the money we had. I'm now proud of the homely old thing. It's been
across the country many times, endured many hard winters, and NEVER, not
once, ever, left me stranded. It did blow a heater core, which lead to
a scary Cheech & Chong moment when I hit the defroster, but I made it to
work. The fan went while climbing up to Santa Fe in July, and the
engine got so hot it rattled badly before I could stop it (shudder), but
no problems. Good mileage and cheap parts = more money for the '67!

My mom had a ****vette. I think the Tempo comes out as a BMW in
comparison ;)
