Subaru AWD...replace all tires?

2002 Subaru Legacy
I have 2 tires that are very bad because I should have rotated them
more. Anyway, I was told today by the shop that they will only sell me
4 new tires for my AWD car.

Dose this sound right to you?

Thanks
Scott

The reason here is that all 4 tires should have the same rolling
circumfrance for reliable awd use, 2 worn and two new could be a problem,
but the difference is cicumference would have to be at least 2", of course
tread design and traction capabilities also figure in.

I don't know if this is the case with Subaru, but using old and new
tires on the earlier Volvo AWD system could cause serious damage to the
AWD unit.

I would get all new tires because you will reduce the wear on your AWD
system and notice a much better ride. After getting 4 new tires have a
full alignment done. Finally, rotate those tires every 5,000 miles.
