C4 cooling

I need some help. 1990 c4, temp is good when driving but when idling
the temp begins to rise and almost overheats. No leaks, replaced all
seals and gaskets, changed thermostat. Water pump appears to be
working but not well, no leaks from weep holes. Is the pump starting
to fail but no symptoms? What do you think? I plan to change the pump
out this week end, I am wondering if I am overlooking something.

Thanks
Joe

Did you bleed the air out of the system?

Before you spend any more time and money, what makes you think it is
overheating? A C4 can easily go to 230 when sitting at idle on a hot
day. This is normal.

Still Corvetteless after 3 months. ARGH!!!

Dale,

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't aware 230 was normal. I thought that
was hot. Why the huge fluctuation in temp when idling?

Thanks

Joe

When you come to an idle for a long time, turn on the A/C to lower the
engine temp. That starts the A/C fan which also cools the coolant in
the C4.

Of course you know to check the area in front to the radiator. C4s are like
vacuums and you'd be
surprise what you will find - leaves, plastic, misc trash.

Joe,
At highway speeds the ram air flows much more air thru the radiator than the
fan could ever hope to, it also lowers the ambient temp of the engine
compartment. In reality most vehicles wouldn't need a fan if they only ran
on the highway. Excepting of course the mountain grades with the A/C on ;-P

I cannot stand the car running at such high temperatures. But, 242 is
the top of the chart so you are well within the overheat condition. The
factory radiator is too small and has plastic tanks. I installed a new
all aluminum one with twice the capacity. The car runs at 193
consistantly. I ahve replaced the waterpump three times in twelve years
so they are bound to fail. Also, you really need to check the radiator
cap to make sure that it is holding pressure. If it is not you will run
hot too. Go to the dealer as the aftermarket caps are not worth the money.

Better yet, turn on the heater. :P (it works)
