Gear wont change in auto Lebaron GTC 1995

Hi Guys,

I have a Chrysler Lebaron GTC 1995 model. It was working fine until i
got it inspected. The guy was trying to fix the reverse lights in the
rear and eventually when i went to pick up the car the following
happened:

1. The speedometer not working

2. The gear not shifting. I can change it to all gears like D, 3, L R
P etc etc. But whatever gear i put in, it does not shift from 1 to 2
or later. It stays in gear 1, no matter if i am D, L, 3. Everything
else is ok. The mechanic said it was speed sensor relay and he
replaced it. But that doesnt work. Now he is not sure himself. Any
help will be appreciated. Also if someone can tell me how to find the
detailed guide to repairing this car, that would be great. Many Thanks

AG.

I'm not familiar with your particular car but it sounds like the
mechanic tried to find the reverse light switch and found the vehicle
speed sensor instead. I just hope he didn't apply 12V to it and fry the
puter.

Hi,

I just posted my question about the problem with 1999 Town & Country
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...c3c09cdacdb578
and then started reading other posts and found you post with almost
exactly the same problem! - Gears not shifting, speedometer not working
and in addition "service engine soon" light is on. I recently had "clock
spring" replacement which Chrysler recalled due to some fault. Couple
of weeks after the repairs this problem came up all of a sudden.
I thought something is wrong with transmission, but speedometer didn't
make sense.
Did you finally find the source of the problem? Was it a speed sensor?

Thanks,
IP.

Dear IP,

The problem was solved finally, it was the main computer of the care
(engine computer) which went bad, the speed sensor relay was replaced
first, but it did not work and then the computer was replaced. That
made it working, albiet not the way it used to. I think it needs
software reset or something like that.
My sincere advice is dont take it to ANYONE other than who knows what
he is doing. These are all electronic controlled cars. you transmission
went into a LIMP so that you can drive it to someone and read teh
diagnostic code. Most dealers will charge 50-70 for diagnostic on this,
and i think its worth. if you find a place cheaper, but who has the
ability thats ok as well.

Its a electrical problem adn you needa diagnostic code reading place.

Many thanks

Thanks a lot for the information. I didn't take a van for
repairs yet. - Was thinking about replacing the sensor myself
first. Now I'm thinking that limp mode may be result of a computer
going bad not the sensor, like it was in your case, May be the
sensor failure is just the more frequent one.

What was the final cost of repairs for your car?
Computer probably more costly than just the sensor.

Thanks,
IP.
