Check engine light question
 

Have a 1997 Malibu 6 cyclinder with air and 125,000 miles on it. I
have taken it in yearly to Chevy garage and had them fixed whatever
they have found wrong. Early this summer they fixed all the codes that
showed in the computer which numbered 2 of which one was a leak in
some airline, Do not remember other. Runs fine but getting old and
rusty. Oil get changed on regular basis usually every 3,000 and tuned
up at 100,000 miles because they said it had platinum plugs and trans
and power steering flushed at recommended intervals. Coolant was set
to recommended temp when they fkushed and refilled it.

The last two or three winters when it gets cold like this AM in the
20s and blustery the check engine light comes on. It stays on a
couple days or until weather warms up and goes out. I check all
fluids and they are good and the car starts and runs fine and does not
stall or anything. When I take it in it gets in garage and warms up
the light goes out and they tell me they can not check it unless the
check engine light is on.

Any suggestions as to what could be causing light to come on??

Often there are two sensors. One for oil level on the side
of the pan and one for pressure near the filter.
Jump the one on the pan (if there is one) and see if the
light goes out.

buy a code reader and check it yourself. the computer should retain
codes, even if the light is not on. basic readers are $35 and up.

But like I said it happens in really cold weather only!! If it was
the oil sesors why would they do it only during COLD weather??

Jim Beam is correct. Read the codes or have them read.
It could be anything.

My s10 recently, on a cold morning, set a p0128 code. It means the
vehicle did not reach the specified operating temperature in a
specified period of time.

Can I ask what if anything you did to fix the problem or what caused
it??

did you get a code reader? what codes do you have stored in your car's
computer?
