Bait Car

I'm watching this show on TruTV called, "Bait Car," where the LAPD
essentially baits car thieves with an expensive car left in the 'hood,
generally with keys in ignition and unlocked. Of course, the car is
equipped to shut off when the cops send the signal.

What amazes me is just how stupid some people are that they take the
car anyway eventhough anyone with two functional braincells would see
it for the trap that it is.

What do you expect of a prospective driver when speed limits are
underposted?

Responses I've heard on similar shows:
"It's my car I just left the paperwork at home."
"It's my friend's car he asked me to move it for him."

At least one guy saw the bait car as it was, opened the door, saw the keys
and called the cops.

It got even better on, "Operation Repo," or whatever it was that
followed. The best part was some clown in a Spock suit (ears and all)
whose car was repoed because he spent the month's payment on VIP
tickets to some trek-head convention...

"Operation Repo" is like "Dragnet", It's based on real stories. My
guess is "Operation Repo" gets pretty creative... especially since they
do stuff real repo men would lose their license over.

Exactly. It's purely for the show.
Note what they show on the screen, "reenactment".
IOW, every party is hired to play a part.

Most states now have very strict laws on repo orders.
Even in california. IIRC, california law says they can not simply walk onto
someone's property and take the vehicle. They either have to knock first,
explain why they are there or have the cops with them as well.

In Ohio, even 30 years ago, a repo man had to knock and explain and give
the owner time to remove any personal items.
Snatch and run would get the repo man busted.

I don't watch it but did catch one clip where the guys crawl in and
make a comment about 'hope it's not a bait car'

Years ago my sister-in-law left their car in the driveway with the
keys in it, unlocked. It was stolen that night.

Don't ever make the assumption that someone isn't stupid enough to do
such a thing, and that's what the thiefs are betting on.

Not to say the car thiefs are much smarter. It's a toss up, really.

Anyone ever just torched the thing where it sat? Since the cops most
likely stole the car themselves through some forfeiture law, that
would serve them right.

Every winter in this area there are announcements on the news that it
is illegal to start and leave a car running to warm up due to the auto
theft problem. Every winter there are cars stolen because people do
it.
