Handbrake cable...

....snapped. (2.0JTS 156 saloon 2002).

There still seems to be some tension when I pull the level ALL the way up,
so perhaps the cable is just snapped on one side (there are two rear
cables?).

After an unfortunate 'rolling way' incident when the car was young, it is
left in gear at all times when parked, so the only time I ever use the
handbrake is when I park on a hill. I know its an MOT fail (October), but I
don't actually need one - lift the clutch with the footbrake on and you can
do a perfect hill start!

Big job to replace?

DIY or garage? (Time is always an issue).

Bout £180 IIRC for the garage

WTF? If there's no significant difference with a 2001 2.0TS, this sounds
very expensive. Few years ago the cables cost me less than 20 euros each
and even on the driveway it's an under 1 hour job.
Which reminds me: I have to do them again. Ruber covers on the cable ends
are gone, which is an MOT failure.

I don't know GT, but if you have a driveway, jack and stands, and at least
one right-ish hand. It should be doable. Just make sure you loosen the
tension nut under the brake handle before you try to remove the cables.
And make sure the hand brake is well adjusted after the change. Too loose
and it won't brake, too tight and you might burn up your rear brakes.

And there are indeed two rear cables, replace both.

My memory may be weak. I've since sold the car and have none of the
invoices.

???

Mine went on the 156 within a month of me acquiring it,
cost less than 1/3 of that at our local garage.

Like I say, my memory is old and feeble.
