Driveshaft Stuck in Hub by
Chopface
Hello,
I attempted to replace the driveshafts in my '91 Civic Si this weekend
and failed. I got the ball joint separated fine, but I could not get the
driveshaft out of the wheel hub for the life of me. I soaked it in
penetrating oil, beat the hell out of it, tried some light heat cycling
(was...

ECU function in 88-91 Civics by
Chopface
Hey,
I was wondering if anyone has a general idea about how long it takes the
ECU to 'learn' to its greatest potential. I'm not sure of the best way
to frame this question, but it relates to my observations of my '91 Si's
engine speed relative to the car's speed.
When I go on highway trips I'm...

O2 sensor OEM or aftermarket by
Chopface
I am no expert, but I installed a Bosch 02 sensor in my '91 Civic Si
this past fall and have found it to work fine. The original did not die
(no check engine light), but I suspected it was 'lazy' as described in
the usenet archives and on various webpages. I seem to be doing a little
better economy...

Transaxle Noises by
Chopface
Hey,
I hear an odd noise sometimes as I release the clutch and engage 1st
gear on my '91 Civic Si on what I believe to be dry pavement. The
quality of my clutch release seems to be closer to 'correct', as opposed
to either too fast or too slow when it happens, but thats a rough
observation. I...

Alternator Advice - '91 Civic Si by
Chopface
Hello,
I was on a trip back to my home on a 2-lane highway tonight, and I was
about 50 miles out when my charging system warning light came on my
dash. I made it home with no incident. I had to have my headlights on
because it was dark. I cut all my other accessories when the light came
on and for...

Seized Bolts to Anticipate? by
Chopface
I am planning some suspension bushing work for a 1991 Civic that is
driven in salty roads in the winter. I replaced the dampers and springs
last summer, and it was a lifesaver to have been warned that the damper
mounting bolts for the rear dampers are often seized. This car is my
daily driver and I...

Brand New Ball Joints by
Chopface
Is it normal to not be able to move the stud around by hand with the
joint off the car, never installed? I'm probably just paranoid, but I
went the aftermarket route this time and was wondering if this is
normal. I can swivel the joints installed on my 91 w/ 143k miles by
hand. I guess my car will...

Tegger: Did you do your clutch yet? by

I'm curious. I did my first a few weeks ago on my '91 Civic Si, and so
far so good. I know you've got an Integra, but here's a few things I
thought I'd sha
I didn't go sttrictly OEM, but As I understand it I basically got the
same parts. I bought a Daikin/Exedy kit for my car, and the way...

Stumbling / Stalling when Releasing Clutch by
Chopface
Hi,
1991 Civic Si with ~150k
Tonight I went grocery shopping and drove around and let the car warm
up. The car sat parked for around 45 minutes in 30 deg. F weather. I
drove about a quarter mile then and let the car idle as I ran into a
building for 30 seconds.
I don't remember any problem...

The Art of Haggling and Other Questions About the Civic Hybrid by

Would you view it as an investment that will pay off for them some day?
How does the economics of licensing work out for Toyota? Don't they sell
their technology to Ford...

Header by
Chopface
Will an aftermarket 4-2-1 header give any better gas mileage than a
stock manifold for a '91 Civic Si? I wouldn't go out and blow a wad on a
new fancy one, but from looking at used prices on ebay, it seems they
can be had for pretty cheap. Also, I've thought about seeing what
salvage yards do with...

Wheel Bearing Play? - '91 Civc Si by
Chopface
Hi,
I got a passenger side knuckle from a bone yard today for $30 and
cleaned it up tonight to get ready for this weekend. I got the knuckle
because my original wheel bearing got trashed at a shop I took my
original knuckle to with the driveshaft stuck in it (looks like the
driveshaft survived...

Transmission Bolt Size Question by
Chopface
Hi,
Can anyone remember what size the fill bolt is on 88-91 Civics? I think
its right around 17mm, but I want to know for sure because I am away
from my tools and want to just buy/borrow a wrench for only that bolt.
I've got a transmission leaking due to a new driveshaft not fitting
correctly in...

Driveshaft Installation Problem by
Chopface
Hello,
I've been having great difficulty correctly installing a reman.
driveshaft (Cardone #60-4003) on the driver's side of my '91 Civic Si.
When I install the driveshaft in the transmission it locks into place,
but it is not all the way in. It leaks oil. I replaced the passenger's
side...

Alignment Advice by
Chopface
I replaced the stock dampers and springs on my '91 Civic Si w/ 134k this
past weekend with an aftermarket 'performance' kit (small amount of
lowering, forgot to measure). Luckily I had a bushing kit on hand that I
am going to slowly install over time, because one of the rear lower
damper mount...

Nice page about 'bedding' brake pads by
Chopface
http://www.kitcarbooks.com/brakepads.html
I am doing the rotors and pads on my car soon and found this. Does
anyone know what kind of material Honda or other manufacturers use in
their pads? I bought standard Nissin replacement pads for my 91 Civic
and I think I might try the 40mph->0mph method...

Idle Fluctuation by
Chopface
Hello,
I've got a '91 Civic Si with the stock 1.6L MPFI setup and a manual
tranny. I put an AEM cold air intake on in August and I don't suspect
any problems from it directly. It has 136k miles and is well maintained
as of late (IMHO).
Over the past few days the car has developed an idle problem....

Civic Head Gasket by
Chopface
Hello,
I am wondering what the symptoms of a failing head gasket are. I know
that if you have coolant in your oil, or oil in your coolant that is a
sign that it has already failed. Can a compression check tell you
anything, or are there too many causes of low compression in a cylinder
to nail it...

Upper Control Arm Bushings by
chopface
Hi,
'91 Civic Si (3dr hatchback)
152k miles
I recently took my knuckles off and had new wheel bearings and lower
ball joints pressed in at a shop. I also installed new upper control
arms myself. All work was done on both sides. I have yet to get an
alignment since the work. The car is riding...
