Homemade Coil Tester_How Can I Make One? by
[email protected]
Hi! In December 1981 I went to the Gulf Outport in New Orleans to pick
up a car that had been shipped from the Philipines.
The mechanic used a home made coil tester.
He removed the coil from the car.
Then he attached it to his coil tester to test for a blue spark.
It had a scissors switch and...

tie-rod end (and SF mechanic suggestion?) by
Sam[_10_]
I have 2 dilemmas (a quartlemma?). 1) I don't know if I should have a
lot of the front-end work (i.e. tie-rod end and king pin replaced)
done simultaneously, or just the essential. 2) I don't know who to
bring the car to.
1) I have a 1965 Ghia (with a 1600cc dual-port engine). When I bought
it ~6...

4 lugged rear drum on a 66 Beetle by
JS[_6_]
I converted my 66 Beetle's front brakes to discs with the 4 bolt pattern
wheels. I'm not crazy about the 4 to 5 bolt adaptors so I want to buy new
wheels, all with the 4 bolt pattern. The question is, can I put a 68 4 bolt
pattern drum on my rear spindles without any problems to accept the 4...

Which Weight Oil To Use In My Beelte? by
[email protected]
Which weight oil to use in my '73 Beetle?
I have been using Castrol 40HD in hot weather, 30HD in mild weather,
and 10 W30 in cold weather.
Most seem to like 20 W50, but after reading Ed Hackett's article on
multi -grade oil I am trending towards Bob Hoover's opinion of 40HD in
Hot weather and...

What happened to the Beetle's heater by
[email protected]
On a late model Beetle last night I was driving down the freeway and
it was cold outside. For a good half hour the heater stopped
working. No air would pass through the vents at all no mater how many
times I moved the heater control knob up and down. The hot air would
not go. It just stopped...

Conversion from generator to alternator - who makes a good kit? by
barnhart_pinball[_2_]
My 72 SB has a junk generator, so we made the decision to swap to an
alternator...I've been looking at different kits from SoCal and Mid-
America. I wasn't real impressed with the Mid-America kit as the
instructions for it were reprinted 74-75 alternator install instructions.
Who makes a good...

Rear tail light swap on late model Beetle by
[email protected]
I have a late model VW Beetle with the elephant style tail lamps. Is
it possible to swap these lamps for the 1971 style lamps? Do I have
to change the rear wheel wells which I don't mind doing? How involved
is the process and is it doable without help?

Parts Made In China, Are They OK To Use? by
[email protected]
Hello!
There are some pats made in China that I wold like to try, but I am
hesitant to use them.
Are they OK to use?
They look a little rough around the edges.
If I used brake master cylinder made in China, I think I would replace
it after 3 years.

Just one of those weeks by
[email protected]
Last week I thought I would have time this week to do some work on the
garage & shop. But nope, our farm got hit by a tornado on Sunday
morning.
So once again the garage & shop get put on the back burner.
So I get to spend the next couple of weeks cleaning up the mess. Lots
of large
oak trees...

73 vw brakes vs newer by
LLBrown
I just got my Thing running after MANY years in the garage. The brakes feel
really bad, I have to really push to get a result and the braking is just
not up to what I expect.
Were VW brakes from the 70s just poor compaired to today's or is there
something going on that needs attention?
How...
