Brake Specs: 99 Civic LX by
Elle
For a 99 Civic LX 4-door sedan, can someone please post the specs for --
-- rotor thickness
-- brake pad thickness
-- drum shoe thickness, if it uses drums in the rear
I have a friend with this car who gets vibrations in the steering wheel when
she brakes. Anything else you'd check right now?

Installing Control Arm Bushings: Tips? by
Elle
Anyone have any special tips for this?
I am struggling mightily with this for my front lower
driver's side control arm on my 91 Civic LX, 176k miles.
I heated the whole arm in the oven for about half an hour at
150 degrees F. I applied soap and then PB Blaster. I did not
clean the control arm...

91 Accord main relay locaton by

It helps to have the new one in your hand when you're on the
left side of the dash, near the driver's usual knee
location, trying to spot it. Alternatively, maybe the
pictures and photos at the following sites will...

Inbd Wear on One Tire by
Elle
Any sage advice on whether to replace the other tires or how
to rotate them at this point?
Background:
1991 Civic, 179k miles. One of my (then) front tires
displayed inboard wear about 7500 miles ago. Back then I
rotated it to the rear, did some suspension work, and think
I found the main...

Honda brake pads? by
Elle
Honda OEM pads do not cost significantly more than high
quality aftermarket pads. From my reading, they are made for
Honda brake rotors and so will yield less dust and noise and
likely less wear on the rotors.
I recommend purchasing them from www.slhonda.com or
www.hondaautomotiveparts.com...

Manual Tranny Fluid Observations by
Elle
1991 Civic Sedan owner here, 182k miles, original and only
owner. The owner's manual for this Honda prescribes either
ordinary 10W-30 or 10W-40 (depending on expected ambient
temperatures) for the manual transmission fluid (MTF), with
a change interval of 2 years/60k miles, whichever comes...

CV boot replacement by
Elle
If it's torn, the conventional and emphatic counsel is dirt
got into the joint, and it's going to fail soon.
Depending on how experienced you are, I'd buy a half-shaft
(which holds the inner and outer boots and joints for one
side) for $70 at Autozone (lifetime warranty) and do it...

Rotating Engine Using Wheels? by
Elle
91 Civic, manual transmission, here. I am doing a timing
belt replacement. The front of the car is on jackstands, and
I put the transmission in 5th gear. I freed the pulley bolt
just fine, but then I wanted to rotate the engine so #1
piston was at TDC blah blah. I thought turning either of the...

Timing Belt Tension Problems by
Elle
91 Civic, 197k miles
I replaced the timing belt and tensioner the other day. I
cookbooked my way through setting the tension, not knowing
how things worked, and am pretty sure the rat-a-tat-tat I
heard from the engine is the belt, somewhat loose, hitting
the upper timing belt cover, for one.I...

Mystery Nut--Anyone Identify? by
Elle
Can anyone please identify the nut pictured at the following
site?
http://home.earthlink.net/~honda.lioness/id16.html
It's head is 12 mm across. It has some sort of locking
mechanism. It sheared off its stud, presumably due to age
and the vibrations that resulted while I was grinding off
the...

Windshield Repair by
Elle
Got a couple of bad, approx. 6-inch cracks in my 1991 Civic LX's lower dr.
side windshield tonight, emanating from a quarter size mash mark, presumably
from a rock hitting the car at relatively low speed. Sounded like a bullet.
Darn.
From many years ago, there are also two dime size mash marks...

Ignition Timing: How Automated? by

When setting the ignition timing of 1990s Honda cars, how
critical is it for the fixed pointer to line up exactly with
the center BTDC timing mark (of the three BTDC marks) on the
crankshaft pulley?

well as other Hondas) is to...

1997 Civic EX low fuel milage solution by
Elle
Good work. A few questions for the archives, since this has been a bit of a
contentious issue in the past here, with some saying PCV valve
malfunctioning won't affect mileage noticeably, and others saying oh yes it
can. (I replaced mine on my 91 Civic in 2003, and the mileage shot up
10-20%. The...

Cleaning Contacts of Bulb Sockets by
Elle
One of my 91 Civic LX's rear, side brake lights partly went

this was happening.
Is there a clever way or tool to get some sand paper, a
file, spray, or whatever into the socket to...

Coil Spring Compressor Query? by

OEM Online Honda Parts Sites by

My 91 Civic is due for some new ignition wires. I started

aware that dealerships increasingly offer parts online at...
