Toyota Hiace Powervan 4WD conversion? by MartinS
Hi I live in the UK and have a standard 2WD Toyota Hiace Powervan (circa 2000) which I have converted into a campervan. It's a great little beast and does everything that's required of it... except driving on slippery surfaces such as slightly damp grass or even gritted roads with a slight...

Suzuki Vitara fuel injection short by [email protected]
Hi, I'm posting from a remote part of Scotland where our 1997 1600cc Suzuki Vitara JLX has hit a problem with its fuel injection. The engine just cut out one cold and wet night, stranding my wife miles from home. We got the Vitara towed back home and all we can find is that the fuse to the FI...

Hub and disc assy doesnt go back far enough by wortho
I am in dire need of assistance as I have changed my bearings and repacked the hub with grease and trying to install the disc assembley back onto the stub axle, but it seems as though it is not going back far enough to allow the calipers to fit on. The car is a FJ40 Landcruiser 1976 and I am...

SAE Grade-8 bolt snapped @135ft/lbs by ultralight
I'm dealing with a critical application. If these fasteners fail, the results could potentially be fatal. I need maximum security. I've been torquing 1/2" grade-8 bolts to 135ft/lbs. Tonight, one of the bolts snapped in half while torquing. This made me rethink all the other bolts that I've been...

Best tires for my '95 Land Cruiser? by Jeff Olsen
I want good on-road manners, it needs to be GREAT on wet pavement, good on snow, and as good as possible for icy stuff. Mud is not really a concern. Brute strength is not particularly relevant but I want a decently strong sidewall. It'd be nice if they lasted forever and were relatively...

24 Volts to a 12 Volt winch for 30 seconds? by [email protected]
Has anyone applied 24 Volts to a 12 Volt winch for 30 seconds? I need to pull about 300 pounds faster than the 12 Volt winch allows. I don't believe that a 2,000 pound 12 Volt winch would be too max'd out at 24 Volts pulling 300 pound. What do you think?

Stolen Land Rover 90 by john
Hi all, The landy is a repsprayed (mid blue) one from the original blue (darkish), quite shiney with matching wheel arch flares the original blue is still visable on the door insides and the roof (inside). Chequer plate around the door handles, wingtops, sills, and petrol cap, winch on the front...

Purpose of Centrifugal Clutches for 4x4's ? by [email protected]
Folks, I am currenly on the search for a clutch for my 4runner ... Of course centerforce is in the consideration. I wonder if the centrifugal clutch makes much sense in a 4x4. As here we need clutch grip at low rpm, whereas the centerforce will start gripping really hard once the rpm go...

suziki vitara - is it big enough? by David
I'm looking at hiring a vehicle in Crete to take two adults and two kids around. I guess the vitara would be great for most of the time buzzing round the island, but does it have enough space to take the luggage of two adults and two kids from the airport to the hotel? Thanks

Hard starting Cherokee by SBlackfoot
My buddy has an '89 Cherokee, inline 4.0L. When he starts it he has to crank it for a good twenty-thirty seconds before it catches every time, hot or cold. He says that it runs fine other than that. I've suggested checking fuel pressure while cranking and after shut-down to see if it's a bad...

Range Rover question by MercedesGal
The Check Engine light just came on on my 1997 Range Rover 4.6 HSE. I took it to the mechanic who hooked it up to the diagnostics machine. The readout said that the sensors for 3 items relating to emmissions controls needs to be replaced. He reset the check engine light. Today the light came...

Bring back the Brat or modernize the Wrangler by Carl Taylor
This is a request for Subaru, Jeep, Toyota, etc. to produce something like the old Subaru Brat, which was essentially a 4WD car with low range gearing. With today's engine technology it could get gas mileage in the low to mid 30s on the highway, while having true off-road capability. Today's...
