Watch your speed when driving at night!! by
223rem
On three different occasions, all late at night, in three different
Indiana cities, I've been radar-ed by cop cars (twice from behind,
once from an oncoming) on deserted streets. Who'd think of obeying
the speed limit (35-40) on a practically empty street at 3 am?!
So the highway robbers are now...

Stalling Cars Via OnStar: A Hacker's Dream Come True?
Greetings. Ready to turn over the keys of your vehicle to the cops, or
that clever hacker in the next lane? How about that creepy guy following
you on a lonely country road?

Portland's Bridge Pedal Debacle by
Paul Berg
~
News article from The (Portland) Oregonian - August 14, 2007
Officially, it's called the Providence Bridge Pedal. But the annual bike
ride over Portland's bridges earned a new name Sunday -- Providence
Bridge Ped-debacle.
Bottlenecks not only forced cyclists to walk their bikes along parts...

How reliable are turbo engines? by
223rem[_2_]
It would seem that a high RPM, small high-output engine (for ex. Subaru
WRX STI or Mitsubishi Evo) cannot last too long. The stress on its
components is
just too much. Can such an engine last, say, 150,000 miles without
major repairs?
Is there any special, expesnive maintanance that a turbo...

OBAMA WILL WIN EASY IF HE CALLS FOR A RETURN TO THE 55 SPEED LIMIT by
Speeders & Drunk Drivers are MURDERERS[_1_]
He should say it's time for americans to actually do something about the
gas crisis instead of just blaming it on some conspiracy by Big Oil . And
point out that lower speed limits will also sharply reduce the highway
crash rate and thereby save lives and lower auto insurance. This is a...

Turbo-charging a V8 Mustang: $6000 by
223rem[_2_]
Saw that on SpikeTV. Wheel HP went up from 270 to 370. Parts cost over
$6000, and it was a labor intensive job.
Cool, but it doesnt appear to make financial sense. (V8 Mustang invoice
+ $ 6000) is more than the invoice on a Pontiac GTO or a SRT-8 series
Hemi-equipped Chrysler/Dodge. And you never...

Appalling Police Action in Palo Alto by
Bob Flaminio
Coming onto northbound I-280 at the Page Mill interchange*, around 5:00
in the evening. Traffic is typically moderate, with ambient speeds of
around 75-80mph (the posted speed limit is 65). There's a cop in front
of me on the onramp, so I get a nice clear view of what happens next.
The cop...

What would cars cost if they left off the silly frills? by
Laura Bush murdered her boy friend
I think an automatic tranny is truly useful but power steering, brakes,
and windows are a joke. Same with tinted glass and fancy paint jobs
and a million other doodads like the warning light for the windshield
washer fluid and turn signals emebedded in the side mirrors. No
question to me but that...

critique my freeway driving habits by
Usual Suspect
There seems to be a lot of talk in this newsgroup about how it's immoral to
stay in the left lane. Well, guess what, I do just that. I'll explain my
reasons for doing it in what follows.
If I don't have to exit for another 5-10 miles and the freeway is divided, I
tend to get into the left lane and...

Prevailing Speed vs Posted Speed Limit by
Bob Simon
I am trying to convince my wife that if safety is your highest
concern, then it is better to drive the prevailing speed than the
speed limit. If this is in fact true, can anyone point me to an
authoritative source?

Want lower gas prices? THEN DRIVE SLOW by
Speeders & Drunk Drivers are MURDERERS[_1_]
Keep it under 60 on the open road and in town coast up to stop lights
and accelerate gradually. Slow driving will also greatly reduce your
chance of being killed or maimed or doing the same to others. Reject
the Big Oil propaganda that fast and wild driving is macho. Only idiots
and...
