Hesitant 1972 Bay by Gareth Edwards
Recently started having this problem with my Bay 1600cc. It is very hesitant at low revs, and even if I put my foot down or pump the throttle a bit too get some fuel in there, it still takes a little while to pick up. Once the revs pick up it pulls strongly. It needed a service anyway so I...

Modifying a VW for the postapokalyptic future .... by Robin-Louis Clevis
You know, 2006 is near, the nuclear war with Iran is only a few months ahead. After that, the Earth will be a desert, radioactive and most parts uninhabitable. So how can I modify my VW so that I can still use it in the desert world of tomorrow ? You know, some Mad Max "The Road Warrior" -...

Old computer program "VW Mechanic" by SeventyOneBug
Hi... I'm new to the group and wanted to first say "Hi". I have been a long-time bug owner (for about 20 years) with miscellaneous bug over those years. Most recently a '71 standard bug. My last one was a '58 that I had to get rid of because I moved and it just wasn't going to work out. (Wish I...

Type I Clutch Cable by Doug
I have a 1967 Type I Beetle with a stock diaphragm clutch. The clutch cable breaks every couple of years. It always breaks at one of the ends where the cable is crimped into the fitting. It never breaks anywhere in between. I always grease the cable upon installation. Is this common to break this...

Brought another VW home today... by Project Magnet #1
I ran across this in someone's signature on Samba: "1960 VW bug/pickup conversion (junk)" I sent him a message asking if he had pics of it. He sent me a few and I offered a trade of a tacked together rolling sand rail chassis for it, Today, after 276 miles and 3/4 tank of diesel, the Baja...

"new" starter grinding by Mel P.[_2_]
I replaced my starter with a 'new' rebuilt one... When I turn the ignition, there's a grinding noise momentarily and then it starts. I removed it to check the flywheel gears and the starter gear look fine, no shavings. Is it possible the starter is bad? What else should I check? tia,

Rear diagonal arm -- fasterner question by Remco
I'm looking to take my 72 rear diagonal arm off. With the tranny out, the frame is almost bare so taking this piece off gives me a good chance to get rid of all the rust and re-paint it all. That 17" allen bolt is to be "peened" according to Bentley.. What does this mean, exactly? I noticed it has...
