It's a bunch of old gas station photos - but
nostalgic nonetheless! I picked up on the
simplicity of most of the terminals back then,
no credit card slots, NONE of the modern
safety features(sprinklers, foamers, bollards
at the ends of where the pumps were). No
tacky ads for gas cards, junk food,...

How much should an engine roll? (Cavalier) by
George[_23_]
('04 Cavalier, Auto)
When I shift between drive and reverse, the engine rolls a couple of
inches. It looks like more than it should be. But, I (so far) don't
see anything funny-looking about the mounts, and I read things like
" Important: Torque axis mounting systems allow more engine...

CVT And Kick Down Switch ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Have never had a car with a CVT.
Do all new CVT cars "still" have a Kick Down switch ?
(Thinking of a 2013 Subaru Outback in particular)
Would this be used for getting a bit more speed quickly when trying to
merge into a highway flow from a, e.g., a dead stop ?

R134 and Kerosense Heater - Not a Good Mix by
Vic Smith
Just a one-off that happened a few nights ago.
My son and I changed the radiator in my '93 Grand Am. A crack.
It was easier to disconnect the A/C line to work the rad in and out.
I didn't even use the A/C this year and don't care about it anyway
since I only do short street trips in the car. He...

tool thread spinoff: 12 pt vs 6 pt by
AD[_2_]
What's the purpose of 12 points? (given that they are more likely to
damage bolt heads I got to ask!)
I nearly always see them on box end of open closed combination
wrenches
and 12pt sockets are not uncommon also.
Why would anyone need a 12pt socket???

MAF parameters by
[email protected]
My Haynes manual has a value to check the MAF sensor of my vortec at idle. I think the spec is 9 grams per second, which it mataches.
Is there anywhere on the net that explaines what the value should be while driving or at different rpm's? I am trying to learn this stuff on my own.
I appreciate...

Gas engine exhaust extensions and back pressure by
Existential Angst[_2_]
Awl --
Recently, in asking about pipe diam/length and pressure drops for natural
gas, I was surprised at how significantly delivered gas volume drops with
length. For example, for 3/4" pipe, the cfh drops from about 350 to 250 to
200 for run lengths of 10, 20, and 30 feet. I"m wondering if...

Swapping a diesel motor into a gasoline car in California. Is it legal? by
David O Rodriguez
Hello all.
I have a 1984 Mercedes Benz 190D. The motor is just about indestructable and gets very high MPG. However, the car's body, interior and transmission are now shot beyond the investment of the cost of repair. Yesterday I found a 1991 Mercedes Benz 190E with a very good condition body and...

Headlight aiming by
Ivan Vegvary[_2_]
Just discovered that the Nissan Murano (2007?) has adjustable headlights. There is a knob on the left side of the dash for this function. Is this why so many headlights are aimed irritatingly too high? California used to hand out tickets for mis-adjusted lights. Do all newer cars have this...

Simple brake job on '96 Explorer 4x4 by
gpsman
x-post to rec.autos.tech,alt.trucks.ford
1996 Ford Explorer 4x4, 4.0L
You ****ers didn't tell me.
I thought I was in for a simple pad replacement, with no idea I was
going to be pulling the rear axles to get to the parking brake/s
(which was the real "issue").

PCV Valve Location by
MLD
Have a 2008 Toyota Avalon. Trying to find where the PCV valve is located.
Have looked all over the engine compartment and haven't had any luck
spotting it. 38,000 miles on the car and the Dealer recommended replacing
it. Wants about $50 to replace the $5-7 part. Said not interested in...

Can a starter motor get "weak"? by
Jack[_32_]
My 87 Dak is acting like the battery is weak, but it has a Sears
Diehard, less than a year old, and all the cells are full and check out
good with a specific gravity tester. The voltage at the battery is 14.5
volts when idling and 13.25 volts after charging on a 10 amp charger. I
cleaned both ends...
