How much electricity do these things use when not in use? by micky
I'd appreciate it any replies went to all three groups that this is posted to so I don't have to read all three to see all the replies. When I started in Usenet, that was considered the proper way. How much electricity do these things use when not in use? 1) Laptop power supplies, when the...

Blended synthetic motor oil by mike[_36_]
Up until this month I always bought the dino juice at Costco on sale which a few cases of lasted me until the next Costco dino juice gas engine oil sale. Now that Costco no longer seems to be selling any dino juice I'm looking at their full synthetics and blended synthetics for comparison...

Conventional oil hard to find? by mike[_36_]
Kids are on spring break so I changed their oil & filters. Bought Costco oil but to my surprise they no longer sell dino juice. Bought Mobil 1 oil filters at Walmart but they also had no dino juice. Went to O'Reillys but their conventional was more expensive than synthetic. I had Costco look up...

DFI coil high resistance - how come? by Pedro Valdez
On a GM3800 engine, the coils are 6000 ohms new. On a misfiring engine, I found one was 8100 ohms. Now I have had one go open circuit. I could understand insulation breakdown causing short between windings and lower resistance. But how do you get high resistance? Bad solder joint?

Cross rotation of wheels by Robin Goodfellow
Ever since I ditched Chrysler/Dodge in the 70s I've had Japanese sedans. They don't require fancy tires and they allow cross rotation patterns. Every change of seasons I rotate alternating between X & H patterns if the spare isn't useful or just the typical modified X rotation with the...

Brake caliper torque by mike[_36_]
This is a question mostly of your experience as the older I get the less I tend to use torque wrenches (I've had more problems with them than without). Kids are in college so they came home on spring break and I did their oil and filters & wheel rotation and brakes which on these FWD overseas...

Repair costs shop rate lookup by dan
What's a good reliable reasonably accurate way to look up car repairs? It's as easy as "shop rate times flat rate time" but you have to know both. Parts are very easy though as you just add the dealer's inflated prices. I've never been to a mechanic in my life but I've asked plenty how much large...

transmission neutral engine off by Robin Goodfellow
I've been shifting the automatic into neutral at stoplights for years and turning off the engine on long lights (those I know are a couple of minutes) where I do that simply for fuel efficiency. I've never had a transmission repair (multiple vehicles) but I've also never kept a vehicle for more...

graphite in the rear diff?? by Chas Gantz
Has anyone ever heard of this? We just had a guy come into the store and ask for some. He says it quiets the rear down if it's noisy. I've been in the parts business for over 30 years, and I've never heard of this. I can't find anything on the internet either.

Dodge caravan ground points? by [email protected][_2_]
I am getting wierd things happening on a 2001 dodge caravan - all electrical related. I suspect grounding issues. Can anyone advise of the main ground points on this vehicle? - Battery - I guess cable from engine to body. - I am aware of one in the rear tail lamp assembly (left rear I think).

Adjust headlight by Andy
My mechanic adjusted one of my headlights because it was out of alignment due to some body work to my right fender. However, only the up/down is adjustable. I wonder why the right/left is not adjustable? I seem to recall in the 70s where both adjustment could be made. Andy

adjust toe in degrees to centerline by paul
For general purpose adjustment of toe at home what do you use? The problem with using string is it has to bend under the engine. The problem with inches is that often toe is spec'd in degrees. The problem with adjustment is back & forth rolling is a pain. If you haven't tried measuring toe you...

low-temperature thermostats by Pedro Valdez
I spotted a listing on eBay what claimed: Available for all new style LS series engine that have a separate thermostat and water neck. These thermostats are available in 160, 180 and 195°F temperatures to suit any application. Mr. Gasket's 2005 Pontiac GTO test car gained 5 hp with the 180°...

How long have you gone with a badly torn rubber boot in a rack and pinion steering arm? by Arlen Holder
How long have you gone with a badly torn rubber boot in a rack and pinion steering arm? Please don't tell me it's dangerous, nor that it has to be replaced, nor that you can do it yourself, nor that it will last only a day, etc. My problem set is that I told someone they need to replace that...

camber alignment tool by mike[_36_]
What's an OK but inexpensive (around a hundred bucks or so?) camber angle alignment tool for home use? I would assume it requires a mount and a measuring tool of the necessary accuracy & precision (is that about a tenth of a degree or so?) The mount would need to fit normal passenger vehicle...

12vdc car battery charger by alan
My 40 year old steel case 6 amp automotive battery charger finally died. I only want to replace it (and I don't want a contraption that jumps cars). I just want a new 120VAC simple sturdy 12VDC automotive car battery charger. And I don't get out to the stores much lately. Mine had an analog...

Tires that actually last by AK[_2_]
I bought some Yokohama tires at Discount *ires. They have a 60K warranty. But after 15K miles, the tire tread indicator is already showing. Are there tires that actually last to their rated warranties? Thanks, Andy

Polishing my headlights by micky
3 weeks ago I polished my headlight lenses. They came out great. I had replaced a bulb and noticed again how cloudy they were, 2005 car. It took about 2 hours but would have taken less if my back didn't hurt and I had to sit down over and over, and if then I didn't start listening to the...
