156 restyle: Last chance to buy a new future classic? by
Barry Bingham
Saw a copy of "Practical Classic Car" or some such in WHSmugs yesterday
& they were listing cars made in the last five years most likely to
become classics in x years time.
156 was top of the list, with a prediction that it would be the earlier
pre-facelift cars with original nose, interesting...

Dunlop, Pirelli or Michelin? by
Barry Bingham
Time for a new set of rubber on my 156 2.0L. All 4 tyres (205/60/R15 V)
are hitting the wear marks. Up to now I've always used Michelin Pilot
Primacy, these being the original equipment on my year 2000 car. But now
I have the chance to try something else as the whole set need swapping.
The...

Wisbone noise/WD40 by
Barry Bingham
Squeak time again on the 156: got the wishbones swapped on one side last
year but the other side has started and I can't get it done until the
other side of a 2000 mile touring holdiday in which the squeaking will
drive me absolutely bonkers (unless it rains for two weeks!). I've read
that the...

Screeching noise.... by
Barry Bingham
My 156 2.0TS has started to "screech" when I drive off first thing,
or after it's been parked up for a while. The screeching disappears as the
car warms up and seems loudest when it's cold or wet. It does NOT happen
until the clutch is depressed and drive engaged. So parked up in neutral
there's no...

156 clutch by
Barry Bingham
Friend has a 156 1.6 (49K on the clock) which has started emitting a
graunching noise (chalk on a board) when on the biting point in first at
traffic lights etc. Doesn't always do it but is becoming more common. Also
I tried releasing the clutch pedal with the handbrake on and the engine,
rather...

Of cambelts and undertrays... by
Barry Bingham
Recently been helping a friend choose a used 156 and was amused to note
how the official dealer network - even now - holds to the line that 72K is
the change interval for cambelts on the Twin Sparks. I was told that
choosing to change it before then was "optional". Is then paying the £2k
fitted...

156 hesitant start/low rev stalls by
Barry Bingham
Anyone recognise this (on a 2.0TS, 2000 vintage):
Recently the car has occasionally started and "died" at first attempt. It
has required a second turn of the key to get going and stay running. This
symptom is occasional but becoming more frequent. Once running it goes as
well as ever.
A few days...

156 sump plug leak by
[email protected]
Hi folks
I've noticed patches of oil have appeared under my 156 and I'm told
the sump plug is leaking. I've been quoted £135 (inc vat) so far... is
this reasonable? (I'm assuming that the thread has gone in the hole in
the sump.)
My usual Alfa specialist doesn't have the tool for this... anyone...

Tiny shocks on my 2.4 JTD by
be037446
When the engine is not at driving temperature, the car shocks a bit when
in low revs (beneath 2000 rpm)while driving (at "city cruising" speed).
Nothing serious but a bit annoying. On stronger accelerations,
everything is normal.
I'm wondering if this is caused by the air mass meter. The car...

Belt replacement on a 2.4 JTD by
be037446
Hi,
My car recently had it 120.000 km service.
Besides the regular maintenance, the garage also replaced the
distribution belt (as I'm from the dutch-speaking part of Belgium, I
don't know if this is the right english word) and the alternator belt.
Both belts needed replacement according to the...

Battery 156 by
Beer Rock
Just got a battery for my 156 from Halfords & asked for their £5.00 to fit
service - at the time they couldn't fit me in, so I figured - how hard can
it be? and tried the job myself.
My modest set of tools were not sufficient to get to the bolt securing the
battery clamp at the side of the base,...

Forecast Alfa GT depreciation?? by
[email protected]
I am considering buying a second hand Alfa GT (probably the diesel), I
love the look of the car and have always enjoyed driving Alfas. I am
however slightly concerned as to what the depreciation is expected to
be. I know alot of Alfas depreciate like mad (166!!!!) and am not to
keen to see a...
