Gaviscon and drunk driving by Old Wolf
I had someone tell me the other day that if you drink some Gaviscon (a heartburn medication) immediately before taking a breathalyser test, then the test will show as if there were no alcohol on your breath. Has anyone else tried this? (NB. I'm not condoning this behaviour in any way)

Spedding fines: 5 mph increments regardless of speed limit by 223rem
Wouldnt it make (much) more sense to define speeding fines in terms of *percentage* of speed limit rather than in absolute speed-over-the-limit numbers? For example 35 in 25 is much more serious than 80 in 70: 40% versus 14%, although the difference is the same 10mph. As an added benefit, it...

What is it about tailgating? by [email protected]
I've read that this it the thing that infuriates drivers the most, and I agree! Few things **** me off more than seeing some jackass on my bumper when I'm driving over the speed limit myself (and I'm not talking about driving in the fast lane of the interstate, as I believe in slower traffic...

Passing school bus by sardonicus
Hi, I received a ticket in the mail yesterday accusing me of passing a school bus two days ago. Problem is, I can't remember this ever happening. I did take that street (as I do every day) to drop off my child but at an earlier time than was on the ticket. The more important point being that I...

Big Cars Must Drive Slower by proffsl
The bigger the vehicle, the lower it's speed limit. Compact cars could drive twice as fast as luxury lemos. After all, the larger the car, the greater threat they pose.

I fixed an asshole tailgater by Ed White
Suppose the guy had been a wacko with a gun? You sound tuff, but I doubt you are bullet proof. I would recommend either ignoring the guy, or if you can't, just pull off at the first convenient location (shoulder or driveway) and let the guy go. And the little truck with slamming on the brakes is a...

8 Attachment(s) Driving is a Right by proffsl
The US Supreme Court has Ruled that We have the Right of Transit Ordinarily used for Personal Travel on our Public Highways. In the following quote, note the phrase: "and the right, ordinarily, of free transit". The word "ordinarily" is a qualifier for the word "transit". "Undoubtedly the right...

Merging redux (onramp, lane reduction, junction) by Daniel W. Rouse Jr.
So many drivers don't seem to understand how to merge properly... meaning that either they are trying to aggressively cut in front of thru traffic, or else thru traffic is trying to aggressively run merging traffic off the road. I've seen these problems daily during my commutes to and from work...

What's the Road Test like? by [email protected]
I don't currently have a driver's license but I do have a learner's permit. Sometime in the next few weeks I'm supposed to go take the driving test so I can get my license. What I'm wondering is where the DMV representative is going to have me drive and what kind of instructions he/she will give...
