20w-4- Diesel Oil by
John[_28_]
Gave the Squareback an oil change last week and saw some 20-40 Oil
intended for "light diesel" use. Used it with marked improvement. Before
there was a light "knock" when starting which I put down to big ends
a little worn ( after ~ 380,000 miles with only tune ups seemed a safe bet)
..
This oil...

63' won't self center after turn by
[email protected]
I just rebuilt the entire suspension and steering on my 63 std beetle,
front and back. Now my sterning is stiff and my wheel will not center
after turning a corner. I got everything aligned thinking that was
the problem but that had almost no influence on the problem. Help!
Is my sterning box to...

engine number by
Paul[_24_]
I have a 1968 Beetle 1300 which has 5553 F - 465232 riveted onto the engine
where the engine number should be. Can anyone tell me what this means please
as it doesn't seem to match the usual codes? On my previous Beetle the
number
was stamped into the engine case. The car was for the British...

yes, I put more "sag" in the bowden tube.
It is less severe after warming up the motor.
I suspect oil on the clutch linings.

Mallory ignition 50% broken by
john
The new Mallory distributor with igntion bugged out after < 100 miles on it.
Fires only #1 and #2 cylinders.
Left bank is dead. No spark.
I've got the proper coil, it's wired right.
And yes, the wires are in the proper order.
What could cause a failure of only two beats? There's not dirt in there,...

Couple swingaxle questions by
[email protected][_1_]
I'm helping swap out a transaxle in a 1964 beetle. The replacement
unit had axles that were a bit shorter than the ones that came out of
the vehicle, so I was recruited to swap over the axles and also change
one backing plate that had a broken off brake adjuster 'finger'.
So I have the tubes...

What is this? (seriously - found in float bowl) by
john
One of the Kadrons has been on-and-off working and last night it was very
bad.
It is getting plenty of fuel to the bowl. I removed the top and the bowl is
floating (not sunk) and appears good. Then I took it out, sucked out the gas
and found this in the bottom of the bowl.

hee hee, I got in a bit of trouble today :-) by

So I am on the 55 freeway in Orange County, just before the 55 meets the
405, and am stuck in traffic. As we get closer to the problem, my wife
and I notice there has been a fairly bad multicar accident. Call me
heartless, but one of the vehicles involved was a car transporter with a
car which...

flaps, stuff by

A bit of a discovery - a fellow in town has a whole mess of ACVW engines in
storage, none of them running, and he's lost interest in why he got them (a
project never started.) They have been stored indoors for a long time. Very
little rust. (Lots of oily parts.)
Anyway, he's going to invite me...

5 bolt standard wheels by
Dave Angel
Hi all, can someone tell me what year the wheels changed from the 5
bolt 'non vented' type to the 4 bolt vented? I think it may be '66
but not sure. I have a spotted a '67 beetle, but want the older style
standard wheels but just realised it probably won't be a straight
swap ;-(
Thanks

miles on it too soon so I want a daily driver. Background: My mother

Throttle cable broken - which way to thread replacement? by

Was driving home today and made it about halfway here (31miles from my
house to work). Was in traffic, had to downshift to 3rd, then hit the
gas to accelerate and the pedal dropped to the floor. I've had this
happen before in another Beetle and also in a Ford Fiesta so I knew
immediately what had...

Twin/Single port differences. 1300cc ok for tuning? by

Hi there, I have been offered a running 1300 twin port engine for

to play with.
